Zimbabwe has been in the news again recently (See the Guardian’s reports here). There is a pattern it could easily conform to, which is Mugabe being murdered by one of his own bodyguards once he’s lost even the support of his own establishment. But I hope it doesn’t happen that way. One nice thing about the Movement for Democratic Change is its name; it’s a movement for democratic change as opposed to the normal pattern of a violent military coup or popular uprising. It would be nice if Zimbabwe could change government peacefully. Perhaps it is because there is a real chance of this that the European powers and South Africa have so far not taken any significant action on Zimbabwe. If the UK sends troops in, at any rate, that would be tantamount to saying the whole experiment of Zimbabwe has failed and you should have stuck with Rhodesia.
