Toothbrushing

Dot writes: Hugh is the kind of baby who likes to do things himself. And he wants to be big and impressive like his dad.

The toothbrush actually came with the instruction it was ‘not to be chewed’, but let’s not be picky.

I’m quite chuffed about getting Hugh brushing his teeth. Because he objected to it when we first started, I thought I’d try to show him it wasn’t just an arbitrary imposition we were making on him by showing him that we do it too. I doubt we can teach him the point of it until he understands English. So, I held him as I brushed my teeth and hummed a little song ‘this is the way we brush our teeth, brush our teeth, brush our teeth’ –to the tune of ‘here we go round the mulberry bush’. He was very interested in what I was doing. Then, when I brushed his teeth, I whistled the tune for him to make the association. The same tune showed we were doing the same thing. We were both brushing our teeth. And now we’ve done this for several weeks. He still doesn’t like it, but he associates the tune with his teeth. Now we have a proper tooth brush for him instead of the little finger puppet toothbrush we were using. And he can do the brushing himself now and he will do this when given the toothbrush and having the first few bars of ‘here we go round the mulberry bush’ whistled at him.

  2. Well, we will soon have to start something of a toothbrushing regime – even if its with a bit of cloth, Amelia cut her first tooth today without much fuss at all – didn’t realise it had popped through until the ritual gnawing on daddy’s finger while in the bath this evening.

Makes me feel all goopy inside πŸ˜‰

Though Daddy may have been rather goopy on the outside (depending on how sharp the tooth is). Congratulations to Amelia, and happy gnashing!
