Dot writes: bye-bye car. Forgive us if we shed fewer tears than we did for the Very Special Pushchair. You may have been part of many special memories, such as bringing Hugh home from the hospital and our 2008 holiday to Wales, but you’ve been on the market since October, under-used and struggling with problems of condensation and flattening battery, and we are rather glad to have the money instead. We hope you will have a happy home with the nice Brazilian gentleman, and we will return contentedly to being a one-car family. Since you will still be living in Dalkey we may see you driving past and give you a wave. But as I never did manage to remember your Irish numberplate it’s possible I shall fail to recognise you. Which is rather sad, after all.
