Short observation

Dot writes: it is really astonishing how much more stuff you have when (a) you have a second child; (b) the first one (and indeed the second one) gets his own ideas about what toys he wants; and (c) one of you takes up brewing. You notice this especially when you start trying to move all this stuff from one house to another using a transit van. That is all.

And you wonder why we never moved! However, I understand it can be a wonderful opportunity to shed ‘stuff’ – only of course you will find a use for it a week or so later.

The things is, we have been so pressed for time we haven’t been able to go through and sort properly. I’m hoping we’ll be able to do that as we unpack, which will be a gradual business as the house is slowly released from the grip of builders, men who do boilers etc etc. The Dalkey house is currently beautifully spacious with no bookcases and minimal furniture (though I keep being at a loss for somewhere to put down my cup of tea).

Just be thankful that you didn’t have to include your academic books and papers. I still have boxes of them sitting all round the house.
