Curious experience

Dot writes: I was doing a spot of Christmas shopping on Henry Street, which was full of people, and I suddenly had a feeling as though I had become impossibly thin-skinned: as though for a moment I was overwhelmed with the particularity of each individual in the crowd around me, and I was filled with pity and hope and anxiety for all of them. I was on the point of tears, but then I began to think about how I could write about it and the feeling passed. It made me have more sympathy for Margery Kempe, who has always struck me as a very attention-seeking sort of person.
